The Director of the Global Change Research Centre – CzechGlobe is Prof. RNDr. Ing. Michal V. Marek, DrSc.

    Professor Marek graduated from the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Agriculture in Brno and also from Biophysics at the Faculty of Science at Charles University in Prague. 

    In 1992 he was habilitated as docent in Plant physiology at Palacky University in Olomouc. Six years later, he became a doctor of Biological Sciences and in 2001 he was appointed as a Professor of the subject field of Forest Ecology.
    His professional career began as a research assistant at the Faculty of Science at Charles University in Prague. In 1986 he moved to the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and in 1998 he became the director of the Institute of Systems Biology and Ecology of the Academy of Sciences CR, of which he still  is the head.
He has published 263 original scientific papers. He is considered a pioneer of modern eco-physiological methods used in field studies of Forest Ecosystems. He has his personal merit for the fact that the Czech Republic got involved in international research programmes associated with the issue of the Global Climate Change impacts in the nineties.
